OVP's physicians and affiliated providers practice in hospitals and other inpatient facilities. The current opportunities are provided by OVP as contracted by Holzer Health.
OVP HEALTH is actively seeking qualified Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to help grow our IP Hospitalist team at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, OH. Our practice offers Hospitalists a supportive and rewarding inpatient practice environment. The program offers outstanding specialty support along with a "Team" like approach with the ER.

Job Responsibilities
Perform complete medical history and physical examination for hospitalized patients.
Evaluate patients admitted from the Emergency Department or direct admissions.
Monitor and reassess patient condition daily.
Identify new or worsening symptoms and escalate care when needed.
2. Develop and Implement Treatment Plans
Formulate diagnosis and treatment plans in collaboration with supervising hospitalist physicians.
Order and interpret:
Laboratory tests
Imaging studies
Diagnostic procedures
Initiate therapies such as:
IV fluids
Medications
Oxygen therapy.
3. Daily Rounding on Inpatients
Participate in daily hospital rounds with the hospitalist team.
Review:
Labs
Imaging
Vital signs
Nursing reports
Adjust treatment plans based on clinical status.
Coordinate multidisciplinary care planning.
4. Admissions
APP hospitalists often help with new admissions, including:
Performing admission history & physical (H&P)
Writing admission orders
Starting diagnostic workups
Stabilizing patients until physician evaluation.
Some hospitals use APPs mainly for admissions overnight or during busy periods.
5. Manage Changes in Patient Condition
Respond to:
Abnormal labs
Vital sign changes
New symptoms
Evaluate the patient bedside.
Adjust medications or escalate care.
Communicate with supervising physician when needed.
6. Discharges and Care Coordination
Hospitalist APPs frequently manage discharge workflow:
Prepare discharge summaries
Provide patient education
Coordinate:
Follow-up appointments
Home health services
Rehabilitation or SNF placement
Reconcile discharge medications.
7. Documentation
Responsible for accurate documentation including:
Admission notes
Daily progress notes
Procedure notes
Discharge summaries
Billing documentation.
8. Communication and Team Coordination
Hospitalist APPs work closely with:
Hospitalist physicians
Nurses
Case managers
Pharmacists
Consultants (cardiology, GI, surgery, etc.)
10. Emergency Response
Many APPs participate in:
Rapid Response Teams
Medical emergencies
Stabilizing deteriorating patients
However, physicians usually lead codes in many hospitals.
11. Compliance and Quality Care
APPs must follow:
Hospital policies
Clinical protocols
State laws for NP/PA practice in Ohio
Medical record and billing regulations
Qualifications
Candidates must complete an accredited graduate-level program.
For Nurse Practitioners
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited program.
For Physician Assistants
Master’s degree from an accredited PA program.
Programs must be accredited by organizations such as the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
2. National Board Certification
Nurse Practitioner
Must be certified by a national certification body such as:
American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
Common certifications:
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP)
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)
Many hospitals prefer Acute Care NP certification for hospitalist roles.
Physician Assistant
Must pass the certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
3. Ohio State License
APPs must hold an active Ohio license issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
NPs obtain Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure.
PAs obtain Physician Assistant licensure.
4. Standard Certifications
Most hospitals require:
BLS (Basic Life Support)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Typically issued through the American Heart Association.
These are important because hospitalist APPs may respond to rapid response events or medical emergencies.
5. Collaborative Practice Agreement
Ohio requires collaboration between NPs and physicians.
NPs must have a Standard Care Arrangement (SCA) with a supervising physician as required by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
PAs must also work under a supervising physician agreement.
6. Hospital Privileges
Before practicing independently in the hospital, the APP must obtain hospital credentialing and privileges, which includes:
Background verification
Education verification
Clinical competency evaluation
Peer references.
7. Experience (Preferred)
Hospitals often prefer:
1–2 years inpatient or hospitalist experience
Experience in:
Internal medicine
ICU or step-down care
Emergency medicine
However, new graduates may be hired in structured APP hospitalist training programs.
8. Skills and Competencies
Employers typically look for APPs who can:
Perform inpatient evaluations and admissions
Interpret labs and imaging
Manage acute medical conditions
Coordinate multidisciplinary care
Communicate effectively with physicians and nursing staff.
