Job description

The Nurse Practitioner in Medical Oncology/Hematology delivers high-quality, evidence-based clinical care to patients with cancer and blood disorders. The NP manages all aspects of patient care—comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management—within the scope of practice and in collaboration with supervising oncologists and hematologists. This role requires a friendly, caring, courteous, and professional attitude at all times, as it involves significant front-line patient and family interaction.

The ideal candidate supports a multidisciplinary care model and enhances the patient experience through strong clinical skills, clear communication, and compassionate care.

Job Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including detailed medical histories and physical examinations specific to oncology and hematologic conditions.

Collaborate with supervising physicians to diagnose and formulate individualized treatment plans that may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and supportive care.

Manage the day-to-day care of oncology/hematology patients, including monitoring treatment response, adjusting therapies, and managing side effects or complications.

Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic studies (labs, imaging, pathology) and integrate findings into care plans.

Provide thorough patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, potential side effects, self-care strategies, and advance care planning.

Coordinate care with interdisciplinary teams—including oncologists, hematologists, nurses, pharmacy, social work, and support services—to ensure holistic and seamless care delivery.

Support palliative care and survivorship planning as appropriate for patient needs.

Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record following practice standards.

Display professionalism, empathy, and excellent communication skills with patients, families, providers, and staff.

Qualifications

Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing with Nurse Practitioner certification (NP-C, AOCNP preferred) and current Arizona NP licensure.

National board certification and active state NP license in good standing.

Experience in oncology and/or hematology is highly preferred, with demonstrated ability to work in a high-acuity environment.

Strong clinical judgment and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to compassionate patient care.
