Locum Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner needed i n Iowa

MercyOne Elkader Medical Center is seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner to provide PRN coverage as the sole provider for both the Emergency Department and Med/Surg unit. This role requires independent practice in a rural hospital setting with low patient volumes and broad clinical responsibilities. Providers must be comfortable managing emergency, inpatient, and skilled care patients with support from a small nursing and ancillary team.

Job Details / Responsibilities

• Serve as the sole on-site provider covering Emergency Department and Med/Surg inpatient unit.

• Provide emergency care, inpatient management, and skilled care services.

• Supported by 2 RNs and 1 paramedic (plus occasional CNA/NPN support).

• No supervision of APPs required.

• Use EPIC EMR for all documentation.

• On-site imaging, lab, and pharmacy available.

• Clinic setup includes 2 exam rooms per provider.

• Typical volumes:

  • ER: ~3.6 patients/day

  • Med/Surg: ~1.4 patients/day

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Board Certified NP — required

• Active Iowa license (IA) — required

• DEA and CSR — required

• Ability to function independently as the sole provider

• Experience in emergency and inpatient care

• Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills

• Comfortable practicing in a rural, low-volume hospital setting
