Under direct physician supervision and direction, performs anesthetic management of patients undergoing surgical procedures and/or providing labor pain management to include airway management and assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Job Responsibilities

Performs pre-operative examination of patient, reviews medical history, and reviews patient's chart; selects type, dosage, and combinations of anesthesia required to meet needs of patient.
Consults with supervising physician prior to initiating anesthesia plan.
Administers anesthesia by intravenous injection, gas inhalation, regional block, or a combination of these, in collaboration with the supervising physician.
Administers analgesia for labor and postoperative pain utilizing regional blocks, intravenous injections or a combination of these in collaboration with the supervising physician.
Responds to and assists in acute emergency situations by performing respiratory support and assisting medical staff as required.
Monitors and maintains all anesthetics.
Performs airway management during period in which anesthesia is administered, including induction and intubation procedures.
Documents appropriate patient assessment data in the patient record and finalizes records in a timely fashion.
Demonstrates competency in the use of anesthesia and computer based systems.
Assesses pain level in-patients using 0-10, faces or other approved scale to promote comfort and enable patients to participate in their healing.
Supports operating room procedures.
Time and attendance procedures are consistently followed.
Proper identification of patients is consistently demonstrated.
Patient and personnel safety procedures are followed (infection control, fire safety, electric and chemical hazards identified, etc.). System issues are brought to management’s attention in a timely manner.
Interdisciplinary team participation is evident in all areas of practice.
Emergency situations are immediately and competently responded to by providing airway management and by using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques as needed


Participates in additional areas of responsibility, which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA.
Participation in the administration and/or management of scheduling, material and supplies, billing and data management, development of policies and procedures is provided as needed.
Participation in the quality assessment process by collecting data, reporting trends/compliance, attending committee meetings, departmental review, problem focused studies and process oversight is provided as needed.
Participation in the education process by clinical or didactic teaching, BCLS/ACLS instruction, providing in-services, supervising residents and medical students, EMT training and/or facility continuing education is provided when needed.
Participation as interdepartmental liaison by interfacing with other departments such as nursing, surgery, obstetrics, post-anesthesia care units, outpatient surgery, admissions, administration, laboratory, pharmacy, etc., is provided when appropriate.
Participation in departmental and/or hospital wide committees as assigned.
Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with professional development of others.
Strengths and opportunities for professional development are identified and goals for self-improvement are set and documented appropriately.
Identified goals for professional development are met through a variety of educational forums.
The education and development of others is fostered by sharing information learned through individual professional development.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience: MSN

Required Licensure and Certifications:
• Current Registered Nurse license and Nurse Anesthetist certification issued by TN Board of Nurse Anesthetists. Certification by American Association of Nurse Anesthetist.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training:

Completion of nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational

Programs or its predecessor. Compliance with criteria for biannual re-certification, as defined by the AANA Council on Re-certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
