Established in 1973, Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation provides an array of comprehensive emergency, inpatient, primary care and preventative healthcare services to residents of Southwest Alaska residing in twenty-eight (28) geographically isolated villages throughout the Bristol Bay region. In 1980, BBAHC began managing and operating the Kanakanak Hospital and the Bristol Bay Service Unit for the Indian Health Service. Kanakanak Hospital is a critical access hospital with 16 inpatient beds (24/7), has a level 4 trauma certified emergency room, a residential treatment facility, and numerous outpatient services. BBAHC is Joint Commission accredited, operates as a 501(c)(3), has over 350 employees, and an annual budget of $70M.
