University of Maryland Seeking Medical Director for Maryland Poison Center!
University of Maryland is currently recruiting for a Medical Director for the Maryland Poison Center (MPC). This position provides medical direction to all aspects of the MPC and is an important member of the leadership team of the MPC. This is a full-time position with 50% support provided by the MPC and 50% with the University of Maryland Department of Emergency Medicine.


Medical activities
- Provide overall medical supervision to MPC.
- Ensure that on-call medical back-up is provided at all times for the specialists in poison information and for direct consultation with physician callers.
- Participate in teaching students, residents and fellows that rotate through the MPC.
- Oversee and actively participate in quality assurance programs.
- Regularly conduct reviews of hospitalized cases.
- Review all cases with fatal outcome.
- Participate in submission of fatality abstracts and other data reviews.

Program administration and management
- Working with Director of Operations, participate in development of materials for staff training.
- Actively participate in the development and delivery of staff education.
- Participate in MPC clinical research activities.
- Work with Director of Operations to develop policies, procedures, and clinical operational guidelines for MPC.
- Work with MPC staff to review professional education programs.
- Represent the MPC on the AAPCC Medical Directors Committee.
- Meet with and inform the Director of Operations regularly of clinical, teaching and research activities and goals.
- Maintain updated knowledge and skills in all classes of medical toxicology (drugs, plant and animal toxins, pesticides, common poisons, industrial hazardous materials, weapons of mass destruction, environmental pollution, etc.) by continuous review and integration of medical literature, participation in specialist academic conferences, and contributions to the academic field though research, writings, peer review, presentations, and other scholarly service.
- Provide consultation on issues related to poisoning, toxins, and environmental health to local, state, and federal public health and safety officials.
- Actively participate in disaster planning and assist the poison center in responding to a poisoning emergency.

Human resource management
- In consultation with the Director of Operations, select and supervise medical consultant staff.

- Participate in marketing and public relations activities.
- Act as a liaison with the medical community and with state and local regulatory authorities.

- Current unrestricted medical license in Maryland
- Board-certified or board-eligible in medical toxicology (must become board certified within 2 examination cycles)
- Board-certified or board-eligible in Emergency Medicine
- Must be actively involved in the management of poisoned patients
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of individuals from the general public to executive staff to elected officials.
