Academic Acute Care Surgeon

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-Lubbock [Register to View]

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Department of Surgery is seeking Acute Care Surgeons to join our expanding team. The primary responsibility would be covering high-acuity high volume emergency general surgery, with opportunities to cover the surgical ICU, trauma and/or elective surgical practice. There is flexibility to tailor the exact balance of responsibilities to the individual surgeon’s interest, aptitude and training. Duties are organized around a 12hour shift model rather than traditional 24 hour call; in addition to significantly improved work-life balance, this allows time for research, education, administrative roles and other academic activity.

The successful candidate must be BE/BC in General Surgery; additional fellowship training and BC/BE in surgical critical care is highly desirable. The candidate should have exemplary clinical skills, a team spirit, collegiality and an interest in teaching and/or scholarly activity. This is a full academic faculty position, and rank will be assigned based on TTUHSC tenure and promotion guidelines.

The department is active in both basic science and clinical research, and our medical school was recently ranked #1 nationally among graduates as “The best place to learn”. Surgical education is a core mission of the department, and the acute care surgery section works closely with general surgery residents and medical students, in addition to advanced practice providers. The Chair and senior faculty have a strong track record of helping newer members seamlessly become part of the team, and mentoring them in their career growth locally and nationally. There is extensive support for research, with the TTUHSC Clinical Research Institute supporting study design development, IRB and other regulatory submissions, subject recruitment, trained research nurses and statistical analysis at no cost to the investigator. Faculty enjoy competitive salaries benchmarked to national medians, along with a generous state benefits package which includes PTO, paid medical insurance, dental and disability insurance, generous support to attend regional and national meetings, as well as an attractive retirement package.

Lubbock is a growing educational, commercial, medical and cultural center with a college-town atmosphere. The metropolitan population in excess of 300K residents of whom 30K+ are Texas Tech students, lives in mild seasonal conditions with an average of 267 days of sunshine per year. Lubbock residents enjoy an easy lifestyle with low housing costs, unique restaurants, bars and boutiques, and a drive of less than 25 minutes to anywhere in the city. Lubbock also has great public and private school systems and over 66 public parks, resulting in a very family- friendly atmosphere.
