Job Description

Last Update: 12/05/19
Kern Medical announces an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished surgeon to serve as Chair for the Department of Surgery. The Chair will provide strategic leadership, direction and coordination of administrative, clinical, education and research endeavors to the department’s 21 employed and aligned surgeons while enhancing collaboration with the medical center’s academic affiliate. Kern Medical, a 222-bed acute care teaching hospital and the only Level II Trauma program between Fresno and Los Angeles, has more than 3,000 trauma activations each year.

Founded in 1867 in central California's San Joaquin Valley, Kern Medical offers a range of primary, specialty, and multi-specialty services including high-risk pregnancy care, inpatient psychiatric services integrated with county mental health programs, and a growing network of outpatient clinics providing personalized patient-centered wellness care. Providing care for 15,500 inpatients and 125,000 clinic patients a year, Kern Medical is a leading voice for health, healing and wellness in the Central Valley. In 2016, Kern Medical transitioned from being owned and operated by the County of Kern to a Hospital Authority, enabling the hospital to better serve patients as a safety net provider, academic training center, and leader in trauma and specialty services.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Department Chair will advance clinical quality, safety and operational efficiency while cultivating a collegial and multidisciplinary team-based culture to ensure a high functioning department. This position will provide mentorship and leadership to Division Chiefs and Medical Directors within the Department of Surgery. The Chair will build the surgery expertise of Kern Medical and establish high quality, evidence-based surgery practices; recruit high performing surgeons; develop and enhance educational programs for medical students and residents; expand patient care programs and resources; and expand research activities.

Successful candidates for the Chair, Department of Surgery will be respected surgeons with excellent clinical, teaching and research track records in an advanced trauma center. Candidates must have demonstrated effective leadership abilities and experience in an academic medical center or community-based teaching hospital. The Chair will play a major role in the strategic direction and vision of this critical department. This position requires excellent leadership and communication skills. Successful candidates will have completed an ACGME accredited residency in surgery, maintain board certification by the American Board of Surgery and subspecialty certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties as appropriate, and be eligible for an unrestricted California Physician’s and Surgeon’s license.
