Las Cruces is bounded to the west by wide-open desert and to the east by the majestic Organ Mountains. It is home to New Mexico State University and hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, including the Whole Enchilada Festival, the Renaissance Arts and Crafts Fair, the Southern New Mexico State Fair, Mesilla Valley Hot Air Balloon Rally and the Wine and Chile Festival. Nearby is the historic village of Old Mesilla, one of the Southwest’s most historic sites. Sitting at an elevation of 3,900 feet above sea level, Las Cruces enjoys an enviable year-round climate of mostly sunny days and minimal rain and snow. White Sands National Monument lies 50 miles to the east and offers ample opportunities for picnicking, white sand surfing and exploring. The scenic mountain village of Ruidoso – home to the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ski Apache and the Inn of the Mountain Gods – is just a two hour drive from town.
