The presence of multiple chronic
conditions and a wide range of sleep and breathing disorders and diseases, complicated diagnoses
and treatments, requiring the training and experience of a board certified specialist in Sleep
Medicine.
 In an outpatient clinic the incumbent performs a wide range of medical duties covering all aspects
of disorders involving Sleep Medicine that is of moderate to severe complexity.
 Examines patients, orders, interprets, and evaluates the full range of tests when indicated in
patients when diseases or pain syndromes are affecting sleep.
 Understands and utilizes scoring standards as recommended by the American Academy of Sleep
Medicine.
 Makes diagnoses and prescribes appropriate treatments to include continuous positive airway
pressure, bi-level airway pressure, oxygen, drugs or behavioral modalities.
 Makes referrals to the appropriate clinics. Communicates with patients, referring physicians and
the appropriate primary care manager for management of disorders outside the specialty of Sleep
Medicine.
 Provides prescription renewal and telephone consultative services. Provides recommendations or
definitive evaluation for sleep medicine and breathing related disorders in the referral region
through phone consultation, telemedicine, and authorization and evaluation of air evacuation
patients as appropriate. Periodically provides episodic care to clinic patients on a walk-in basis.

 Teaches and provides consultation to other health care providers (nurse practitioners, physician’s
assistants, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows).
 Provides chart, polysomnography, and multiple sleep latency testing review for quality assurance
purposes in the area of Sleep Medicine as requested.
 Examines and conducts thorough studies of presenting patients utilizing and ordering evaluation
assets including electroencephalography, Magnetic-encephalography (MEG), olfactory testing,
and neuro-regenerative, neuro-imaging, vestibular, and sleep study evaluations.
 Conducts comprehensive neurological exams on patients to include cranial nerve, motor/sensory
and cerebellar function.
 Interprets and reports out results of polysomnograms and electroencephalograms, magnetic
encephalography (MEG), olfactory testing, neuro-regenerative, and neuro-cognitive evaluations.
 Provides expert assessment and interpretation of polysomnography, multiple sleep latency,
maintenance of wakefulness testing, actigraphy, and overnight oximetry.
 Diagnose and develops a treatment plan for patients with neurological problems of all
complexities. Interprets and integrates neurological exam test results with imaging, laboratory
data, and information from other disciplines including psychiatry, physiatry, neuroophthalmology,
and general medicine, for diagnostic and treatment purposes.
 Integrates neurological test results with imaging studies, laboratory data, and clinical findings to
prescribe appropriate treatment including neuro-pharmaceuticals, and refers clients to specialists
as appropriate.
 Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in neurology in collaboration with clinicians in other
medical specialties on cases involving complicated and multifaceted neurological and
neuropsychiatric problems.
 Oversees and educates interdisciplinary teams responsible for testing and treating patients with
neurological issues, ensuring that the highest standards of professional practice and ethics are
maintained.
 Makes recommendations to the ISC Director for improvement of patient and family services and
clinical operations related to the implementation and conduct of quality improvement strategies.
 Works in collaboration with interdisciplinary team consisting of clinic physicians and
psychologists, neuroscience researchers, pharmacists, nurses, and professionals in various
specialties. Continually fosters an interdisciplinary approach to care that relies on pattern
recognition of physical, behavioral, social, and spiritual conditions.
 Utilizes patient records, patient performance, and family interviews and counseling as they
contribute essential data in the diagnostic process and appropriate patient care.
 Organizes clinical data systematically for effective retrieval for clinic and investigational
requirements.
 Responsible for analyzing problems that occur in the delivery of services, collection of related
data and information, and implementing solutions and follow up plans to assure that the actions
were appropriate.
 Complete training to obtain knowledge and maintain competency in the following systems;
Composite Health Care System (CHCS), AHLTA, Essentris (CliniComp), Dragon dictation
software, MHS Genesis, and Microsoft Office programs.
