Job Description

Last Update: 10/12/20
Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH) and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Medical Group (MLKCMG) are seeking a Founding Program Director to develop an innovative Internal Medicine Residency program scheduled to start July 2022.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital is a private, nonprofit, 131-bed hospital serving 1.3 million residents in South Los Angeles. The safety-net hospital opened its doors in July 2015 through a unique public/private partnership with the County of Los Angeles, the University of California, and other community leaders and healthcare providers. The Board of Directors is committed to establishing an innovative model of patient-centered, coordinated care delivery, both inside and beyond the hospital walls.

Recognized as “The Hospital of the Future,” the hospital is a state-of the-art facility with the latest equipment and technology. MLKCH has received national awards for their highly sophisticated electronic medical records system systems and received HealthCare's Most Wired® award from the American Hospital Association's Health Forum.

This is an opportunity to create a residency program founded on a commitment to improve community health. The founding Program Director will be part of our long-term vision of ensuring a lasting, coordinated solution for serving a historically underserved and distressed area, and improving the overall health of this population.
The successful candidate will be a confident, visionary leader with the maturity, integrity, knowledge, and cultural sensitivity to inspire, develop, and recruit strong faculty and residents and advance collaborative relationships with community partners.

Why Choose MLK Jr. Community Hospital?
From our CEO to our LEED-certified building, we’ve earned recognitions inside and out. MLKCH has received:
  • MLKCH is licensed and accredited for 131 beds, including 93 medical/surgical beds, 20 intensive care beds, and 18 obstetrical beds, and provides general acute care for the area.
  • MLKCH is already an accredited-ACGME sponsoring institution with no citations, and our institution is very supportive of entering into GME. We have also engaged GME consultants to help you through the process of submitting a new program application to and obtaining accreditation from the ACGME.
  • MLKCH named Most Wired® for third consecutive year.
  • Received the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™.
  • In 2019, the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Elaine Batchlor, won the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award and was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine.
  • Repeat winner of the prestigious Leapfrog designation: Received an “A” rating in patient safety; and is in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide measured by Press Ganey for patient satisfaction.
  • Recognized on the 2018 Hospital C-Section Honor Roll list.
  • Achieved HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 in March 2018.
  • As one of the premier centers of economic and cultural activity in the world, Los Angeles offers an urban education setting that’s rich with medical resources and full-time faculty.
Opportunity Requirements
The Program Director must:
  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Be certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine) or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME’s Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence as a practicing Internal Medicine Physician.
  • At least three (3) years as a faculty member in an AOA or ACGME Internal Medicine Residency Program. Prior GME administrative experience in the past five (5) years.
  • Must be appointed in good standing with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital Medical Staff.
  • Have unrestricted credentials within the Department of Internal Medicine at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and be licensed to practice medicine by the State of California.
Salary and academic rank for this position will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and academic background. MLKCH offers an excellent benefits package including generous paid time off, retirement benefits, etc. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
