Job Description

Last Update: 10/12/20

Located in Northern California's Central Valley, nestled between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a member of Dignity Health, the fifth largest healthcare system in the country and the largest hospital provider in California. Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center is seeking a Founding Program Director to develop an Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program planned to start in 2021-2022. This follows on the heels of three successful residency programs that have already started in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and two additional programs with pending accreditation in OB/GYN and Transitional Year.

This is a rare opportunity to build an orthopedic surgery program of 10 residents (two per year) that will fill a vital need and have significant impact on the quality of care delivery and health outcomes of this population in Stockton, CA. Support and affiliation with a local 10-member Orthopedic Surgery Group is established with a faculty base in place. Through the establishment of this residency program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, the estimated growth of orthopedic surgery cases is expected to increase substantially due to the catchment area and not losing cases to large metropolitan communities. The Program Director will have an appointment with Touro University California and/or potentially UCSF.

The successful candidate will be a confident, visionary leader with the maturity, integrity, knowledge, and cultural sensitivity to inspire, develop, and recruit strong faculty and residents and advance collaborative relationships with community partners.

St. Joseph's Medical Center Overview:

Serving the community since 1899, St. Joseph's Medical Center is a regional destination for specialized care. As a not-for-profit, regional hospital with 355 beds, a physician staff of over 400, and more than 2,400 employees, St. Joseph’s is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is consistently chosen as the “most preferred hospital” by local consumers.

Your Mission as the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program Director:

The incumbent will be expected to perform a combination of the following duties:

  • The Program Director must administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency areas.
  • Approve the continued participation of orthopedic surgery program faculty based on evaluation.
  • Monitor resident supervision at all participating sites.
  • Prepare and submit all information required and requested by the ACGME. This includes but is not limited to the orthopedic surgery program application forms and annual orthopedic surgery program resident updates to the ADS; and ensure that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
  • Comply with the sponsoring institution’s written policies and procedures, including those specified in the Institutional Requirements, for selection, evaluation and promotion of residents, disciplinary action, and supervision of residents.
  • Maintain clinical skills with protected time for direct patient care and CME.
  • Monitor and evaluate the program to maintain compliance and ensure that all educational and performance standards set forth by the Program Director are being met by staff, facilities, and residents.
  • Coordinate all schedules, including lectures and educational sessions, and allocate appropriate time for participation and involvement in all scholarly activities.
  • Assure that the requirements established by the ACGME and the Orthopedic Surgery Review Committee are met by the orthopedic surgery program. Provides verification of resident eligibility to enter American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Maintenance of Certification process.
  • Works with the Designated Institutional Official to meet program and institutional ACGME requirements.

Professional Qualifications - How Do You Qualify?

  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Board certification or eligibility in field of Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Active and unrestricted California Medical License or eligibility for California Medical Licensure; and DEA number.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of clinical practice experience in the specialty post-residency/fellowship.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience as an Associate Program Director of an ACGME-accredited Orthopedic Surgery Program, or three (3) years of participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited Orthopedic Surgery Program.
