The Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is seeking accomplished and innovative board certified/board eligible psychiatrists to work in its Addictions Division. The Addiction Division has close ties and/or collaborations within the VCU School of Medicine, with Pharmacology and Toxicology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Neurology. This is an opportunity for a dynamic leader to help the Department of Psychiatry build collaborative research relationships with clinicians, scientists, trainees, and students and to work across the university and externally, specifically with the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans’ Hospital. Resources will be available to selected candidates to assist in building federally funded research studies/programs and recruiting other investigators/clinicians to the team. The successful candidate should have the vision and interest in helping VCU become a national leader in addictions care and research at the local, regional, and national level.

VCU’s Department of Psychiatry [Register to View] employs over 60 full-time faculty and has well-funded research in addictions, genetics [Register to View] child and women’s mental health, and psychopharmacology. VCU is a large urban university with a robust health science campus and 750-bed university hospital. VCU Psychiatry is ranked #19 by NIH for research funding and its residents and faculty are ranked #1 for teaching in VCU’s School of Medicine. Richmond, the state capital, has a moderate climate and a rich mix of history with modern facilities, excellent suburban housing, and public/private schools and a low cost of living.

In January 2020, VCU’s Department of Psychiatry will have a new chair, Dr. Robert Findling who comes to VCU from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Findling’s recruitment will serve as a catalyst for clinical growth as well as vigorous support for enhancement of scholarly activities both within the Addictions Division as well as the rest of the Department. Successful candidates would join the VCU Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies [Register to View] under the direction of Dr. Gerry Moeller. Research studies underway in the Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies include fMRI studies and clinical trials in addictions, genetic studies in substance use disorders, and brain imaging in mild traumatic brain injury. The Institute has ongoing research funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and active collaborations with TBI researchers with Department of Defense funding. There is also an active clinical and research collaboration with the Substance Abuse Treatment Program at the McGuire Veterans’ Hospital. There are well-equipped and staffed research facilities including outpatient research treatment facilities, and human behavioral laboratory facilities. Located in the same building as the clinical research facilities, the Collaborative Advanced Research Imaging facility houses a research-dedicated 3T Philips MRI scanner as well as urine toxicology testing facilities.

Applicants should have a U.S. medical degree or equivalent (MD, MD/PhD or DO), with licensure (or license-eligible) to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia and DEA licensure. Post–doctoral credentialing in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry and an active interest and background/experience in research, clinical work, and teaching in addictions is required. The responsibilities of this position include providing clinical coverage and teaching of fellows, residents, and medical students. Successful candidates may participate in federally funded addictions research as a co-investigator or principal investigator and as applicable have a joint appointment at the McGuire Veterans Hospital.
