At Genoa Telepsychiatry we increase access to behavioral healthcare for those in need by building telepsychiatry programs that connect members with psychiatrists, APRNs, and LCSWs remotely. Genoa Telepsychiatry is a leading outpatient telepsychiatry community with programs in over 35 states providing nearly 250,000+ appointments annually. In addition, Genoa Telepsychiatry operates within UnitedHealth Group’s business known as Optum Behavioral Care whose vision is to create seamless, innovative systems for members that will improve outcomes while improving member experience.

The Collaborative Care Psychiatrist will operate in conjunction with Genoa Telepsychiatry and Optum Behavioral Care (OBC) to serve as a key member of the virtual collaborative care team for OBC clients. Genoa and OBC are aiming to achieve OBC’s vision by building an integrated behavioral health care and primary care collaboration model based on the Psychiatric Collaborative Care Services (CoCM) guidelines from CMS and the Advanced Integrated Mental Health Solutions Center.

In this cutting-edge virtual team, the Collaborative Care Psychiatrist will interface between PCPs and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to support the mental health and physical health care of an assigned patient caseload from OBC clients. On occasion, the psychiatrist may interact with the patient directly and may prescribe medications, however the predominant focus for this psychiatrist is on consultation. The psychiatrist will have the support of the OBC and Genoa team from the group’s clinical and operational teams.

This is an ideal role for you if you want to be at the center of an innovative model that can successfully improve the wellbeing for patients, you are interested in being part of a fast growing company, and you thrive in a team environment.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Use virtual modalities to interface with PCPs, LCSWs, and occasionally patients
  • Provide regularly scheduled caseload consultations to LCSWs for specific patients and for trends across the patient caseload using a registry and EHR system
  • Recommend any treatment adjustments through the case review process or in ad hoc consultations, including medication recommendations and other interventions after consults to the LCSW
  • Advise on treatment for patients who may need more intensive or more specialized mental health care, supporting treatment in the medical setting until patients can be engaged in specialized care as appropriate
  • When needed (i.e. on rare occasion when seeing a patient), document patient progress and treatment recommendations in EHR and other required systems so as to be shared with other treating providers
  • Maintain professional cell phone and email accounts for contact during usual business hours. Check professional accounts daily and respond to email questions/consultations within two business days, sooner if urgent

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed (board eligible) psychiatrist (M.D. or D.O.)
  • Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and localmasking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained.
  • You will be provisioned with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and are required to perform this role with patients and members on site, as this is an essential function of this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certification in psychiatry (M.D. or D.O.)
  • Licensed to practice in one or multiple of the target states for the program (AR, PA, MA, MN, VA, IN, TX, CA, FL)
  • Diligent at driving new state license application process with support from the Genoa Telepsychiatry operations team
  • 2+ years of practicing as an attending psychiatrist
  • 1+ years of working in a team-based environment (i.e., with other provider types), and/or providing consultations to PCPs and LCSWs
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a team setting
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with patients and other members of the care team
  • Ability to work with other team members and patients by telephone and video
  • Solid grasp of technology solutions and tools and ability to adapt
  • Demonstrated experience being detail-oriented, organized, and have exceptional follow-up capabilities
  • Ability to manage multiple demands and timelines with a solution-oriented mindset
  • Effective at delivering and receiving feedback in a team environment
  • Finally, a strong moral compass and commitment to Genoa Telepsychiatry and OBC’s core values:
    • Mission-driven: We are motivated, above all, by our mission to increase access to behavioral healthcare
    • Emotional intelligence: We deeply value emotional intelligence and the natural instinct to treat others kindly

    • Equality: We treat each other equally, always seeing the merit in others' perspectives no matter who presents them
    • Goal-oriented: We work hard to crystallize goals, create collaborative strategies, and reach stretchy but achievable goals
    • Transparency: We communicate openly – with a bias toward a democratic dialogue
