The Community
Rutherfordton is located about 10 minutes from Lake Lure and about 1 hour south of Asheville. Rutherford County is a literal gold mine of interesting history. Beautiful historic antebellum homes line Main Street near downtown, along with shops, restaurants and one of the best children's museums in the state.
Established in 1787, Rutherfordton is the seat of Rutherford County and one of the oldest towns in western North Carolina. This Revolutionary War-era town has managed to keep its old-time charm while keeping step with the 21st century, from the cluster of antebellum homes in the historic district at the north end of town to the fiber optic hub on the south end. The town’s ridgetop elevations offer stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its location in the Isothermal Belt offers mild weather and outstanding beauty in four distinct seasons. Nearby Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are two of the most visited tourist destinations in North Carolina, and the county is located less than five hours from the Atlantic Ocean.
Rutherford County features a number of hiking, walking and cycling trails, as well as several scenic golf courses. The area boasts a number of bed and breakfast establishments and draws visitors from across the region for numerous outdoor festivals and cycling.
