Job Description

Last Update: 1/14/21

Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM) along with University Pediatricians are actively seeking additional Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians to join our rapidly growing program. Due to the success of our current program and free-standing pediatric facility in Troy, MI, we are in need of additional physicians for both facilities.

This is an exciting opportunity for new graduates and experienced physicians alike!

Highlights about our Opportunity:

  • Full-time, employed opportunity
  • 80% clinical time, 20% teaching and administrative time
  • Attendings are responsible for an ER pod of 10 beds with the support of 2 nurses, 1 technician, 2 residents, and often a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellow
  • Between both locations, we have an annual census of 95,000 patients per year
  • Access to all pediatric subspecialists (medical and surgical) 24/7 allows us to provide the best clinical care to children with all acuities of illnesses

More about our Division:

Children’s Hospital of Michigan has one of the busiest Pediatric Emergency Rooms in the country. We are a Level I Trauma Center as well as an ACS Certified Burn Center. Our Emergency Room has 52 ED treatment rooms, 4 Trauma Bays, and 6 Behavioral Health rooms. All processes and protocols were developed using lean methodology to improve quality and efficiency.

The ED is structured into pods, where care teams work together to provide seamless care. The new 4-bed resuscitation bay is fully equipped to manage multiple critically injured/ill patients. A provider at triage allows the department to efficiently care for lower acuity patients.

The ED is staffed by fellowship trained Pediatric Emergency Physicians, Pediatricians, and Nurse Practitioners. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program, one of the largest in the country, attracts exceptional candidates from all over the United States.

We offer a good work-life balance as shift distribution is extremely democratic. Working with approximately 45 like-minded colleagues allows us to maintain significant flexibility to staff the ER. There is dual coverage for 7 hours at night while the rest of the day has 5 staff attendings working in 5 ER pods.

Candidate Requirements:

  • MD or DO
  • Must be BE/BC with fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Michigan licensed or must be eligible to obtain licensure in the state of Michigan

An interest in academics is welcome as there are ample opportunities for research and/or engaging in scholarly pursuits such as teaching Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellows and nearly 30 residents (a month) from different programs. CHM is one of the participating ER’s in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) and has a robust record of ongoing extramural federal and non-federal funding. The ER also houses the Center for Quality and Innovation; this program’s vision of influencing positive change through data-driven and evidence-based changes.
