About the Area:
This community is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern KY. It is found at the crossroads of Highways 15 and 80 and the Hal Rogers Parkway (formerly the Daniel Boone Parkway). From the mammoth caves and lakes of western Kentucky to horse and bourbon country’s rolling hills and the Appalachian Mountains scenic beauty in the east, Kentucky is full of breathtaking natural attractions worth experiencing. It is the home of the longest cave system in the world (367 miles) at Mammoth Cave National Park. The Land Between the Lakes features more than 170,000 acres and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Cumberland Falls State Park is the home to spectacular Kentucky waterfalls as well as the famous "moon bow." Other natural attractions include the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Red River Gorge and dozens of lakes, preserves, Kentucky hiking trails and more.
It is a great place to live, raise a family, worship, educate children and to do business. The area offers a low cost of living, an affordable housing market, and an opportunity for a physician to truly make a difference in the healthcare of the community. As in most of Eastern Kentucky, the main industry is coal mining, but the city is also focusing now on attracting new industries. Hazard and Perry County offer a variety of recreational facilities and activities, including three city parks with basketball courts, tennis courts, an amphitheater, a picnic shelter, playgrounds, a nine-hole golf course, and volleyball courts. The Hazard Pavilion offers an Olympic-size pool, tennis and racquetball courts, a weight room, and more. Nearby Buckhorn Lake State Park and Carr Creek Lake give visitors many exciting options, such as boating, swimming, and fishing. While various activities occur throughout the year, the entire community especially enjoys Hazard’s four-day celebration of the coal industry, Black Gold Festival, which is held each year in September. Academically, Hazard Independent School (HIS) district consistently ranks in the upper 25% of all Kentucky schools. Hazard High School during the last CATS testing cycle ranked within the top 10% of all Kentucky schools. The elementary, middle and high school teams have won district and regional competitions with many children being able to compete at the state level. Hazard Community and Technical College has its main campus in Hazard. Bachelors and Master degree programs are offered through the University Center of the Mountains, located on the Community College Campus.
