We are looking for high-performing physician or equivalent (MD or DO) to serve as a Sr Medical Director, Clinical Analytics and lead clinical operations, governance, analytics and reporting for the Optimal Care evidence-based medicine program. This individual will report to the Executive Vice President of Clinical Performance, who oversees all affordability work across the enterprise. The Senior Medical Director will be responsible for overseeing a team of physicians who develop and maintain clinical content for the Optimal Care program as well as a team of analytics professionals who develop and maintain analytics and reporting for the program. This individual will help set strategy for the program and contribute thought leadership to numerous implementation and technology initiatives associated with the program. He/she will also launch and oversee a performance evaluation program designed to drive more rapid performance improvement initiatives across the enterprise.

This candidate will be a critical part of Optum Care's national affordability strategy and be a member of the leadership team of the office of the CMO. In that capacity, she/he will work with clinical leaders across our national and local teams and improve our ability to deliver evidence-based care consistently across our network.

Key responsibilities:
  • Drive innovation in program analytics and reporting with the goal of improving physician adoption and use of program metrics and successful identification of new opportunities for clinical programming
  • Build followership and support for programming with local market clinical peers (CMOs, CMIOs, market leaders)
  • Ensure governance process for clinical policies continues to operate successfully and maintains the support and commitment it enjoys from local markets currently
  • Contribute to thought leadership and the strategic direction of the affordability team strategy nationally
  • Oversee a rigorous program effectiveness review process, in collaboration with the Healthcare Economics team, and help drive change management and consulting initiatives based on assessment findings. This will include guiding the design of evaluation studies and identifying best practices for dissemination nationally

Required Qualifications:

  • Physician (MD or DO), active clinical license and board certification, in Internal Medicine or an Internal Medicine-based specialty (e.g. Gastroenterology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonology and Critical Care)

  • 5+ years leading complex analytics initiatives relevant to health care delivery in a value-based care environment

  • 3+ years of managerial experience in roles of increasing seniority

  • 5+ years experience working in affordability initiatives in either a payer or provider setting

  • Experience with medical writing or editing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or equivalent desirable but not required
  • Management consulting experience at a top-tier or big-4 firm desirable, but not required (at Engagement Manager level)
