The Medical Director is responsible for the provision of medical services and supervision of Site Medical Directors.

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited Medical School.

Experience:

  • At least five years of progressively responsible management experience providing health services of similar scope and complexity.
  • 2 years of experience in primary care preferred.
  • Experience in correctional behavioral health care is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed in the state of practice;
  • Holds a current DEA and D.P.S. certificate of registration.
  • Board Certified in one of the following: Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Surgery, Preventive Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
  1. Recruit, select, train, and supervise the Site Medical Directors, primary care physicians, and advanced practitioners utilized throughout the Massachusetts prison system;
  2. Ensure physician availability and coverage both on-site and on-call;
  3. Manage provider scheduling;
  4. Participate in specific case conferences for special needs patients regarding medical needs, placement, and release planning;
  5. Establish evidence-based guidelines and clinical pathways for disease management to include detailed documentation standards;
  6. Design, manage and coordinate a Clinical Performance Enhancement Program (peer review) for all Site Medical Directors, primary care physicians, certain on-site specialty providers and advanced practitioners;
  7. Attend all contractually required meetings and all meetings requested by leadership;
  8. Participate in system-wide Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives;
  9. Serve as the Co-Chair of the Department’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee;
  10. Participate in formulary design and management;
  11. Develop and annually review the infection control program; and
  12. Develop and manage Program clinical operations and guidelines.
  13. Must maintain proficiency in evidence-based practices germane to clinical specialty and general familiarity with current medical practices germane to the Program.
  14. Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.
  15. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  16. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  17. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  18. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  19. Post orders, if applicable, per site contract.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.
