Job Description & Requirements
Director, Gores Family Allergy Center in California
StartDate: ASAP

MillicanSolutions, LLC, an AMN Healthcare Company and retained executive search firm specializing in pediatric executive and physician leadership seek an outstanding academic leader as the Director of the Gores Family Allergy Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) and the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Focused on clinical and research excellence, we are pursuing an internationally recognized leader to establish a destination program for children with food allergies and other severe allergic conditions that will attract patients locally, nationally, and internationally. The Director is expected to establish collaborations with USC and the Keck School of Medicine of USC. The Director will be integral in several key areas of the division: strategic planning, recruitment and advancing Allergy-Immunology clinical training and research programs. The Director will report to the Division Head of Clinical Allergy and Immunology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Gores Family Allergy Center:
For children in Los Angeles who suffer from severe allergic disease, the Gores family has pledged to donate $5 million, which will be used to endow the Pediatric Allergy Treatment Center within the Division at CHLA. In recognition of the Gores family’s generous philanthropic commitment, the center has been named the Gores Family Allergy Center. This gift has expanded the Division’s capacity to provide patients access to a multidisciplinary range of specialty care including food-challenge procedures, clinical trials to advance allergy care, a collaborative clinic with Gastroenterology for patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, a dietician who provides nutritional evaluations, and patient guidance and education on food-avoidance measures. A licensed psychologist is being recruited to support the emotional needs of patients and families.

Key Highlights/Requirements:

  • The Director will be committed to clinical excellence and have a track record of extramural funding in translational or clinical research which has focused on the immunologic pathways that are responsible for the control of aberrant inflammatory reactions as seen in allergic diseases.
  • The Director is expected to have outside funding and track records in food allergy in the form of peer-reviewed publications.
  • The candidate will be an MD, MD/PhD, DO or DO/PhD, and be board-certified in Allergy and Immunology.
  • The individual will be recommended for a USC faculty appointment at the Associate Professor of Professor level, rank will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • The successful candidate will have served in an academic department.
  • The individual will have a minimum of five years of progressive medical and research experience, with an increasing scope of responsibility, including faculty and trainee mentoring and development and involvement in program/center development.

The Division of Clinical Immunology and Allergy:

The Division of Clinical Immunology and Allergy at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) provides comprehensive assessment and treatment services to patients with allergic and immunologic conditions such as food allergy, asthma, atopic dermatitis and other hypersensitivity diseases, as well as primary and acquired immune deficiency disorders. The physicians work closely with each child’s primary care physician to provide a full range of personalized clinical services. Each year, over 4,600 patients are currently seen in the outpatient setting. The problem of allergic disease diagnoses has seen a rapid increase in prevalence over the past three decades. The integration of clinical care, research discovery and development, and training of clinicians in the next generation of care will improve outcomes for children and families.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA):

CHLA has been ranked the best children’s hospital on the West Coast and among the top 10 in the nation for clinical excellence with its selection to the prestigious U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll for 2017-2018, most recently ranked #6. Furthermore, CHLA is:

  • The only freestanding Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Los Angeles County approved by the County Department of Health Services and accredited by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.
  • Designated as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center – an honor held by only five percent of hospitals nationwide.
  • Granted the Beacon Award for Excellence in Pediatric Intensive Care Units from the American Association of Critical Care Nursing.
  • The most recognized and favored hospital in Los Angeles County among families with children, according to a 2010 independent study.
  • A provider of more than $125 million annually in community benefits to the children and families of Los Angeles.

In addition to pioneering new and minimally invasive techniques, CHLA serves as a major regional referral center for children who require life-saving acute care. The medical staff at CHLA includes 528 physicians, 94% of whom are board-certified in their specialty or specialties. CHLA is organized into five departments: Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine; Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; Pediatrics; Radiology; and Surgery. In addition to its main campus in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, CHLA operates outreach regional clinics in Arcadia, Valencia, Torrance, Santa Monica and other locations in the greater Los Angeles area. CHLA cares for the largest and most diverse pediatric patient population of any leading pediatric research hospital in North America, delivering care through approximately 370,000 annual outpatient visits and 17,000 inpatient discharges, as well as 80,000 emergency department visits. More than 16,000 surgeries are performed at CHLA every year, including complex procedures not performed at any other hospital in Southern California. CHLA’s programs for patients with cancer and congenital heart disease are among the largest in the country. To learn more about Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, please visit [Register to View] .
