The Physician Executive, Transformational Partnerships, is responsible for directing clinical, financial and operational opportunity assessments and due diligence processes for potential client partners while managing Chief Medical Officer and Chief Clinical Officer relationships.

This position will engage with client physician executives and advise on solution design initiatives with a clinical focus through both remote and onsite client work. This leader will also help identify synergies and design solutions across administrative and clinical domains for customers. All leaders on the Design team are expected to be hands-on with project design and deliverable creation for customers.

The role of the Solution Design team is to support sales by completing assessments and detailed due diligence to identify financial and operational opportunities at potential clients and internal business units that are being integrated onto the Optum platform. There are also several projects associated with continuous improvement of our valuation methodology, product innovation needs and solution redesign across clinical and administrative functions to unlock value for clients.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external physician executive leaders to support Market Performance Partnerships
    • Connects with internal clinical leaders as needed to ensure health system clinical imperatives are supported through the partnership in a cohesive manner
    • Creates a trusted partner relationship with client executives
    • Ensures physician leadership engagement and solution success through transparent design and solutioning processes
  • Oversees other clinical leadership on the design team and directs them in relationship management across multiple partnership opportunities
  • Supports individual partnership development opportunities by
  • Hires and develops infrastructure for other clinical leaders to allow scale and continuity across multiple simultaneous design projects
  • Provides leadership to and is accountable for the performance of solutions spanning administrative (e.g. revenue cycle, information technology and clinical (e.g. care variation, clinical efficiency, case management) domains
  • Provides expert input to key Optum staff members through the evaluation of the opportunity at a potential client site
  • Identifies and reviews problem areas that Optum can improve through people, process or technology and validates benefit estimates and financial models for potential clients
  • Contributes to timeline and project plan development for the completion of the assessment and full due diligence process
  • Completes the final draft of benefits based on high level assessment and full due diligence efforts, coordinates with key internal and external stakeholders to create buy-in and to obtain sign-off
  • Serves as the primary day to day contact for a potential client, including reviewing the work of the experienced analysts and serving as the coordination point for the certain functions such as practice management, clinical care optimization or other areas requiring clinical expertise
  • Contributes to Potential Client Evaluation methodology development and other functional assignments as assigned
  • Displays the ability to effectively communicate within the potential client evaluation team, growth team and other Optum functional teams
  • Participates in the development of sales materials in preparation for initial and ongoing client clinical conversations
  • Presents to large groups well and has the ability to adjust message to audience (e.g. CFO, CEO or CMO)

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree
  • 15+ years of Consulting or Clinical improvement experience
  • 8+ years of Business Development / Client Assessment experience
  • Hospital based practice experience within the last 7 years
  • C-Suite presentation experience
  • Experience managing through strategic shifts or redirection
  • Successful at navigating matrixed relationships and partnerships
  • Methodology development experience
  • Willing and able to travel 50-75% for client meetings

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $174,600 to $332,200.
