Infectious Disease at UTMB

The UTMB Health System includes 3 hospitals (600 beds), 71 clinics, and has more than 12,000 employees and 1,000 credentialed providers. UTMB has a long tradition of investigation and training in infectious diseases. Approximately 150 faculty members at UTMB conduct research related to infectious diseases, and nearly half of research funding on campus is focused on Infectious Diseases. The Microbiology Department consistently ranks in the top 5 among universities in the country and the Pathology Department (with research largely focused on Infectious Diseases) in the top 20 universities in NIH grant funding.

Infectious diseases-related research centers at UTMB include:

  • The Center for Tropical Diseases, the World Reference Center for Emerging Viruses and Arboviruses.
  • The Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Sealy Institute for Vaccine Development.
  • The Institute for Human Infections and Immunity has the overarching mission to facilitate, coordinate, and enhance research efforts in infection and immunity.
  • The Institute also serves as the university’s locus for administration of the Galveston National Laboratory, a state-of-the-art, high-containment (BSL-3 and BSL-4) biomedical research facility.
  • The Division of Infectious Diseases is an integral part of the larger infection diseases research community of on campus.

Required Education / Experience

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston and UTMB Health is seeking an infectious diseases physician to serve as the Associate Director of Infection Prevention and Control. The successful candidate will be an M.D. or D.O. with subspecialty training and Board Eligibility and/or Certification in infectious diseases. A record of additional formal or informal training in infection control and/or epidemiology and demonstrated experience in hospital infection control and epidemiology is expected. The Associate Director will be responsible for operation of the infection prevention and control program under the oversight and guidance of the Director of Infection Prevention and Control.

The successful candidate will also be expected to provide exemplary and compassionate care to patients and take advantage of research and professional development opportunities within the UTMB community. The Associate Director’s Academic appointment will be in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine. Salary and incentives will be commensurate with the Academic Tank and experience of the candidate.
