About Duluth, Minnesota

Known as Minnesota's gateway to the sea, Duluth is located on Superior Harbor - the largest inland freshwater port in the world. Duluth was home to Dakota and Ojibway natives until 1679 when French voyageur Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut claimed the area for King Louis XIV. Settlers established themselves as fur traders, loggers, fishermen, farmers, and miners. First-time visitors will want to visit the Aerial Lift Bridge and Canal Park - both icons of Duluth. Canal Park stretches along the lakefront and is peppered with restaurants, cafes, shops, and hotels. A 40-mile trip north will bring travelers to Split Rock Lighthouse, which dates back to 1910. When it was built, there were no roads, so workers hauled in all material by boat and lifted it to the top of the cliff.
