The Division of Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, IL is seeking an academic faculty member at the Assistant, Associate or Professor rank to serve as the lead Diabetes Scientist in a newly formed Clinical and Translational Science Group; this faculty member will also join the nascent Clinical Diabetes Section. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively undertake high level scholarship and research projects in the health services, clinical and/or translational research domains. A key expectation of this position is the mentoring of Endocrinology fellows and Internal Medicine residents as well as their inclusion in scholarship/research activities. An important expectation of this position is, minimally, academic productivity in the form of contributions to the peer-reviewed published literature. The core personnel of the Clinical and Translational Science Group is already in place and consists of statisticians, advanced methodologists, individuals highly skilled in developing and maintaining databases including those utilizing electronic health records, and research study coordinators. The lead Diabetes Scientist will provide the overall direction of the diabetes research program and is strongly encouraged to develop collaborative projects with basic, clinical and translational researchers within as well as outside of the Department of Medicine. Protected time for research/high level scholarship depends on the qualifications and professional goals. Tenure-track may also be available. A competitive salary and benefits will be provided along with relocation expenses; the salary will be structured is a generous base + clinical earnings stipend.

The successful candidate must possess a strong commitment to the Southern Illinois University Department of Medicine scholarship/research and clinical service missions.

Memorial Medical Center, a 450-bed community hospital, and Vibra Hospital, a Long-term Acute Care facility, are teaching sites for the division. Springfield, IL is a charming Midwest community conveniently located in Central Illinois just 200 miles south of Chicago and approximately 90 miles north of St. Louis. The population of Springfield proper is 120,000 inhabitants, with an additional 125,000 in the surrounding communities. The city offers an excellent public school system as well as Lincoln Land Community College, the University of Illinois at Springfield and several technical and business schools. Recreation is abundant, with hiking, horseback riding and biking just minutes away. Boating, swimming and water skiing is seasonally available at beautiful Lake Springfield, located on the southern outskirts of the city (15 min. from the medical center). There is a rich artistic community, as well as, several large theater groups. The Sangamon auditorium offers regularly scheduled operas, plays and symphonies. Transportation to and from Springfield could not be better. The city is conveniently located off I-55 which connects Springfield to both St. Louis and Chicago. The city operated airport services major carriers such as United Express and ATA. Additionally, the Amtrak station is located in the heart of the city, approximately 5 minutes from the medical center.
