Practice

• 300+ bed, non-profit tertiary care facility which is a Level III trauma center
• 45,000 ED visits per year and growing
• The ED: 26 rooms plus 3 trauma bays
  • bedside CT and 24/7 Ultrasound + MRI
  • 2 helipads
• Schedule: approximately 1,680 hours—full-time
  • 14 x 10-hour shifts
  • Only 12-night shifts per year
  • Split holidays between everyone in the group
  • Double coverage for all but 2 hours per day—triple coverage from 11 am to 1 am
  • Hospitalist group for adult admissions
  • MED/PEDS for pediatric patient admissions
• Expectations: 80% blunt trauma and 20% penetrating trauma
  • ED docs currently run the code team
• Support staff: good surgical back up
• Send out:
  • Burns and patients needing a PICU—we don’t have one
  • Pelvis ortho, extreme facial, and acetabular (hip) fractures
• PAX system with Radiologists reading everything at night
