Chinle, Arizona is in the heart of the Navajo Nation and is the gateway to ancient sites that are held in great reverence and considered sacred by the Navajo people. One of these ancient sites is Canyon de Chelly National Monument. With sandstone walls rising up to 1,000 feet and many well preserved Anasazi ruins, Canyon de Chelly is home to nearly forty families that make their homes, raise livestock, and farm the rich soils in the valley. It is also the only National Park Service unit that is entirely owned and managed by the Navajo Nation. The Navajo are the largest federally recognized Native American Indian tribe in the United States. Their culture and traditions are geared towards family life and their love for the land. Today many Navajo continue to live a predominantly traditional lifestyle, speaking the Navajo language and practicing the religion.
