Position Description: Provides professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Renders medical judgement regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit. Works under general direction of the Unit Medical Director, with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgement. Directly supervises 2 to 4 Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners in the unit health services.

- Complies with Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) policy and procedures including all necessary paperwork.
- Responsible for providing primary ambulatory medical care to the inmates of TDCJ. This includes examination of patients, ordering x-rays and lab tests to help make an accurate diagnosis, and planning and execution of treatment.
- Diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries of patients.
- Elicits and records information about a patient's medical history.
- Analyzes reports and findings of test examinations and diagnoses patient's conditions.
- Administers or prescribes treatments and drugs.
- May perform minor surgical procedures commensurate with surgical competency.
- Refers patients to specialty care or medical specialist/practitioner when appropriate and necessary.
- Provides immediate care for medical emergencies of patients.
- Duties will include after hour Regional on call.
- Requires special knowledge and skills in orthopedics, general medicine, and emergency medicine.
- Operates Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Provider will not operate TTUHSC computer equipment for any purpose other than work directly related to TTUHSC.
