*Position Description
Provides advanced professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Coordinates the delivery of clinical health care within a TDCJ Correctional institution, insuring that the appropriate health care is accessible and provided to the inmate population in a timely fashion regardless of segregation status. Renders medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit according to TTUHSC Correctional Health Services Policies and Procedures, TDCJ Policies and Procedures, and National Commission on Correctional Health Care Standards. Works under the general direction of the Regional Medical Director with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Receives general supervision from the Regional Medical Director. Supervises physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Work is performed in a correctional institution with contact with inmates. Deadlines, interruptions, meetings, and travel necessary. Additionally, work requires collaboration with the faculty and staff at TTUHSC.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Supports the Service Plus Philosophy of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental safety policies.
  • Directs, coordinates and insures the provision of the medical health care services within an assigned correctional institution; delegates responsibilities and specific duties to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assures the unit’s compliance with standards ACA, TDCJ, TTUHSC directives CMHC Health Services Policies and Procedures, court orders and other applicable rules, regulations, and statues.
  • Performs all duties of a correctional physician as set forth in the current job description.
  • Performs patient care in the RMF, responsible for Daily rounds, intake, discharges, ordering meds, ordering and reviewing Labs and x-rays; Submitting request for specialty care and advanced procedures.
  • Evaluate patients in Specialty Clinic, Holding area and Infirmary PRN.
  • Organize and conduct daily Patient Care Meetings.
  • Close interaction with Unit Administrator.
  • Oversight and supervision of extenders.
  • Responsible for completing charts, death summaries and Grievance Reviews.
  • Member of Regional P&T, Utilization Management, TTUHSC Correctional Managed Care Peer Review, RMF Committees, and statewide committees as assigned.
  • Function as liaison between consultants, transportation and providers at out lying units.
  • Close interaction with Utilization Management with regard to patient specialty care and resource management.

Required Qualifications
+License/Certifications:+ * Current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. * Current Drug Enforcement Agency and Texas Department of Public Safety controlled substances registration certificates.
