Position provides Medical Care to inmates within the NC Correctional Institution. Position performs physical exams, and provides primary care services for acute and chronic medical conditions to the inmate population at these facilities. Provider evaluates patients in a medical clinic setting, consults with patients, and refers to other clinics or specialists as needed, orders diagnostic and lab tests, writes prescriptions, transfers patients to infirmary unit, documents electronic medical records, and performs life saving procedures. POSITION IS A PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE TO ALL INMATE PATIENTS ASSIGNED TO THESE FACILITIES, and may also cover nearby facilities as assigned. Position also provides emergency care for employees as needed, and may participate in policy development, staff meetings and other administrative functions. Position will be supervised by the Deputy Medical Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of theory, principles and practices of general preventative medicine and the techniques involved for patient care.
  • Must have an extensive knowledge of developments in the field of medicine and skills in treating and diagnosing a variety of diseases and injuries.
  • Experience in the practice of family or internal medicine is required.
  • Must have the ability to compile clear and concise notes for the patient's electronic medical record and clearly present medical documentation to other health care providers.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with associate personnel, patients, and the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina and one year of experience.
