The Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiology Program at Presbyterian Hospital is recruiting a board certified/board eligible Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist.

The successful applicant will join a growing group of 4 pediatric cardiologists. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience. The primary service will include pediatric and adult congenital cardiac catheterizations ranging from diagnostic cases to complicated interventions on both inpatient and outpatients. The complete spectrum of pediatric interventional procedures is currently being performed. The cardiac catheterization lab includes a biplane lab, as well as, two hybrid rooms.

Interested candidates should have experience and expertise with all types of diagnostic and catheter-based cardiovascular interventions. This is a full-time position. Clinical responsibilities will be primarily in the cardiac catheterization lab with additional inpatient and outpatient activities. The physician is expected to deliver the highest quality pediatric interventional cardiology services to patients and their families.

Presbyterian Hospital is the only congenital cardiac surgery program in New Mexico and serves approximately 3.5 million people in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. An active congenital heart surgery program performs approximately 200 operations annually. The hospital houses state of the art operating rooms, neonatal intensive care unit, and a pediatric intensive care unit. Busy clinical programs provide comprehensive non-invasive and invasive evaluation and care of children and adults with heart disease, including over 10,000 outpatient visits and 100 catheterizations.

Inpatient:
  • Perform and interpret pediatric and adult cardiac catheterizations and interventions
  • Consult on ED, NICU and PICU patients at Presbyterian and Lovelace Women’s hospitals
  • Assist pediatric cardiology, electrophysiology, adult congenital, and pediatric heart surgery colleagues with the management of service and inpatient consults
  • Assist in post-operative cardiology patient management
  • Read pediatric and adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) echo’s, ECGs and inpatient holters
  • Assist with transesophageal echocardiograms in the PICU, OR, Cath lab, as needed

Outpatient:

  • Prepare for upcoming clinics by determining prior testing required for each patient
  • Provide patient management for all patients scheduled for clinic and any urgent add-ons as agreed upon with colleagues
  • Provide interpretation/billing for holters, echo’s, event monitors for patient panel
  • Communicate plan with referring providers
  • Provide the same services for assigned outreach clinics
  • Return parent calls and refill authorizations for patient panel
  • Create referral letters and denial of authorization petitions for patient panel
  • Prepare patient presentations for surgical conference and M&M conferences
  • Supervise treadmills and stress tests for patient panel
  • Participate in maintenance of ICAEL certification, staff/nursing education, and quality improvement projects

Call Coverage:

  • Be available via phone at all times while on call
  • Respond to patient/parent and provider calls. Appropriately notify primary cardiologist for patient management decisions made overnight/weekend
  • Provide prompt performance of urgent/stat echo’s
  • Provide prompt interpretations of any outside echocardiograms or ECGs
  • Manage urgent notifications of holter/event monitor/lab results
  • Round on inpatients on service over the weekends/holidays

Competencies:

  • Perform and interpret pediatric and adult congenital heart catheterizations
  • Perform transcatheter valve replacement, ASD/VSD device closures, and other interventions
  • Perform and interpret TTE and TEE
  • Perform and interpret ECGs
  • Perform and interpret Fetal echo’s (non-essential)
