Anesthesiologists treat patients that require medical care and procedures. As a commissioned officer on the U.S. Army health care team, you can build a distinguished medical career while making a difference in the lives of the Soldiers and their families; part time or full time.

Job Duties

  • Examine, diagnose and treat disease or injury as part of a surgical team
  • Exercise command of medical units as provided by law and regulation
  • Perform staff functions in health support for commanders at all levels
  • Medical research on diseases of military importance
  • Participate in Graduate Medical Education and train other personnel
  • Serve unique duty positions for the department of emergency medicine and the medical school faculty

Requirements

Active Duty

  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree from an accredited U.S. school of medicine or osteopathy; foreign graduates may apply with permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates
  • Current license to practice medicine in the United States, District of Columbia or Puerto Rico
  • Eligibility for board certification
  • Completion of at least one year of an approved graduate medical education internship
  • Completion of a training program in an anesthesiology specialty
  • Between 21 and 42 years of age (may request a waiver)
  • U.S. citizenship

Army Reserve

  • In addition to the above qualifications, permanent U.S. residency is required for Reserve duty officers.

Compensation

ACTIVE BENEFITS:

  • Incentive Pay: $59,000 per year
  • Board Certification Pay: $6000 per year
  • Effectively creating an extra $130,000 per year in salary, in addition to Active Duty base pay and housing allowance

  • No-cost or low-cost medical and dental care for you and your family

RESERVE BENEFITS:

  • Loan repayment up to $250,000
  • Student Loan Repayment at $40,000 per year (up to 6 years/$250,000)
