We have an exceptional opportunity for a Chief of Medicine to join Veteran Health Indiana at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center located in Indianapolis, IN.

Responsibilities of the Chief of Medicine

The Chief of Medicine is the Service Chief of Medicine Service and is responsible for the clinical operations and administrative functions of inpatient and outpatient General Internal Medicine, along with the subspecialties of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Hospitalists, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Pulmonary and Rheumatology. The Chief of Medicine also is responsible for supervision of the physician staff in these sections of Medicine Service.

The incumbent is responsible for participation in the promotion and oversight of appropriate performance improvement and systems redesign activities and advancing the principles of access and timeliness of care.

The Chief of Medicine supervises the clinical Section Chiefs in addition to the Medicine Service administrative staff (Supervisory Management Specialist, Secretary, Program Support Specialist and Program Support Analysts).

Qualification

Basic qualifications include U.S. citizenship; an unrestricted medical license in at least one state; be board-certified or board-eligible in a specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties; and must meet the qualifications to be both a member of the medical staff at the Roudebush VAMC and a faculty appointment in the IU Department of Medicine. Should have documented experience in effecting organizational change and managing a diverse work force.

Clinical Duties:

This position is predominantly administrative in nature, but the incumbent may have a minority of their time (10-45%) in a clinical role as appropriate to their clinical discipline and specialty area.

Other:

The Chief of Medicine works collaboratively with non-Medicine Service Chiefs, supervisory staff, and frontline staff in other departments and sections to effect organizational improvement and participates in national and VISN organizational activities as called upon.

The incumbent will oversee the joint recruitment and assignment of practitioners with the academic affiliate, IU School of Medicine.

The Chief of Medicine is also highly supportive of our educational and research missions. The incumbent is responsible for having oversight of all house staff and medical student training activities in Medicine Service. The Chief of Medicine is also responsible for working with the Associate Chief of Staff for Research to assure Medicine Service physician investigators with protected time for research have a proper balance of clinical and research activities and utilize their research time effectively and productively, obtaining VA Merit Review and other grant funding within reasonable timeframes.
