Job Description

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE (SIUSOM) is seeking an accomplished clinician scientist or scientist to become Director of our Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (CADRD). This tenured/tenure track position will also hold the Kenneth Stark Endowed Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease Research. Neurologists, geriatricians, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists and others with an advanced degree and commensurate experience and skills are invited to apply. Southern Illinois University offers a dynamic, challenging, busy and satisfying position within the School of Medicine.

The CADRD is funded by a large annual grant of $1.5 million from the State of Illinois as well as academic support from the school and Memorial Medical Center. The Center has an outreach network of 32 hospitals or clinics throughout Illinois, a brain bank and autopsy program, a neuropsychology program, a robust clinical trials program, dedicated wet lab space, equipment and personnel, core laboratory facilities, the SIU Center for Clinical Research and specialty clinics for the treatment of Alzheimer disease and other degenerative dementias. Five faculty and two midlevel providers are actively engaged in clinical care, clinical trials and basic research related to Alzheimer’s disease with federal, state and foundation funding in excess of $7 million. At least one additional faculty position beyond this one is available for the center. CADRD is in the SIU Neuroscience Institute, which is comprised of the departments of Neurology and Psychiatry and the divisions of Neurosurgery, PM&R and Psychology, offering opportunities for multi-disciplinary care and research collaboration.

SIU School of Medicine has recently celebrated its 45th anniversary and has received national and international recognition for innovation in medical education. Two major 500 bed academic medical facilities serve the community and are teaching sites for SIU School of Medicine.

Highlights of the position and area include:
  • Developing a new vision and strategy for the CADRD, resulting in re-organization and development in all areas of administration, outreach, teaching, research and medical services, using the state grant to leverage growth in the research and clinical enterprise.
  • CADRD resides in the midst of a large rural area, providing opportunities to explore technology, improve access, enhance care and engage in clinical research amongst an oft-neglected segment of population.
  • A competitive salary, excellent benefits package, laboratory space and research support with 10% clinical effort (if clinician).
  • Working with School of Medicine Development office to grow philanthropic giving for the CADRD.
  • Direct a research plan to include allocation of resources, submitting grants to and obtaining grants from external, private, state and/or federal agencies.
  • Interact with the Illinois legislature and departments of Public Health, Aging, Education and Public Aid to develop strategies and collaborative efforts that will advance the aims of the Center.
  • Opportunity to develop and participate in regional dementia research consortium involving academic centers in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.
  • Family oriented communities, excellent schools and very affordable housing.
  • Easy access to metropolitan amenities in Chicago and St. Louis.

Illinois licensure is required prior to employment.
