Chair of Biomedical Informatics in Michigan

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine seeks an exceptional leader to serve as the founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. The department will provide education to medical and graduate students and also lead the development of collaborative research and scholarly activities in biomedical informatics.
The medical school is a collaboration involving Western Michigan University, a national public doctoral university, and two award-winning teaching hospitals that are nationally recognized for innovation and quality. The primary outpatient site for the medical school is a modern 60,000 square foot building on the Oakland Drive Campus. The 350,000 square foot educational building on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo underwent a $78 million renovation and expansion project including two laboratory research floors and a state-of-the-art Simulation Center that is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus is a life science, technology, and engineering incubator serving the earliest startups to maturing companies.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Dean of the medical school, the chair will provide visionary and leadership for the educational and research goals of the department. Candidates should have clinical training and experience across the full range of domains from bioinformatics to genomics to population health, with special expertise in clinical informatics and the emerging field of health data science. Candidates should demonstrate skills in and dedication to: improving patient care and building a learning health care system; faculty career development and the training of future scholars; securing external research funding in a collaborative research environment; the ability to foster a supportive, collaborative, creative, and innovative workplace; and a proven record of scholarship, leadership and management in a diverse and complex environment. The department will also play a central role in the development of a new practice-based research network for faculty across the medical school and the Kalamazoo area.
The medical school currently operates a 1-year certificate and 2-year Master’s degree program in clinical informatics with two faculty. Faculty provide instruction to medical students throughout the 4 years of their education. The new chair will recruit additional faculty and grow offerings to include graduate programs in health data science, a 5-year combined MD/MS in clinical informatics, and an expanded, integrated, intensive informatics track for medical students. Additionally, an ACGME-accredited fellowship leading to board certification in Clinical Informatics is planned with department and medical school faculty already in place.

Qualifications:
- A medical degree and advanced training in a domain of biomedical informatics from an accredited program in informatics or data science, or board certification in clinical informatics.
- Eligibility for full licensure to practice medicine in State of Michigan; must maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine with privileges at clinical sites corresponding with clinical responsibilities.
- Practical experience in the design, development, adoption, and application of IT-based innovations in healthcare services delivery, management, and planning.
- Work experience in a medical school setting with a working understanding of the clinical, educational, and research mission.
- Ability to interpret and implement accreditation criteria to achieve program accreditation by relevant accrediting bodies.
- Track record of accomplishments in informatics, with corresponding accomplishments in scholarship and peer-reviewed recognition that merit faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
- Demonstrated skills in strategic planning, system implementation, and clinical operations.
- Strong record of leadership, project management, and collaboration including the ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, residents/fellows, and students.
- Experience fostering a culture of inclusiveness among diverse faculty, staff, residents/fellows, and students.
- Demonstrated analytical and computer skills including use of statistics, with strong problem solving, writing, and oral communication skills.
