Chair, Department of Pediatrics - Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin
Physician-in-Chief – Dell Children’s Medical Center
Seeking applications and nominations

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, in conjunction with Ascension Texas, is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief of the Dell Children’s Medical Center. As a new school, the Dell Medical School has an audacious goal of redefining the role of academic medicine so that it is better aligned with society’s interests, in particular by accelerating innovations that improve value in the health system. Department chairs are a crucial part of the overall leadership team, both in their area of expertise and also working collectively to create new models for clinical care, education, research, and community engagement. For this rare opportunity, we seek an individual with the skill set, creativity, and passion to utilize the vast resources available within the school, the broader university, and the community to affect meaningful change to pediatric care without the typical constraints of an established academic medical center but in conjunction with a thriving children’s hospital. This position will report to the Dean of Dell Medical School, as well as serve as Physician-in-Chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center, working with the President of Dell Children’s Medical Center.

The Dell Medical School’s first class of 50 students entered in July of 2016. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School is pursuing innovation in the redesign of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. It is the fifth medical school in the UT System and the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has been made to enable the development and success of the Dell Medical School. The School is partnering closely with the community and regional healthcare providers and payers to provide new models for health promotion, healthcare delivery, and clinical care for the community. Ascension Texas is its primary hospital partner.

Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas is a state of the art, 248-bed free-standing facility. It is the only dedicated free standing Children’s Hospital in the region and is a member of Ascension Texas and the Seton Healthcare Family. Serving a 46-county area with a population of 1.9 million, Dell Children’s is the premier health care provider for children and adolescents.

Required Qualifications: Medical degree from an accredited medical school; Board certification in pediatrics; Eligible for appointment as tenured faculty, Professor Rank; Record of outstanding leadership and achievement in academic medicine. The preferred candidate is one who will take advantage of the unique opportunity to create better models of care and prevention, advance methods of medical education, and create opportunities to accelerate innovation and research. While traditional leadership skills are a must, the candidate must be creative, comfortable with risk, and highly collaborative. The candidate will establish and strive to create a top-tier program distinguishable from all other leading programs across the nation.
