The Physician Assistant Specialty evaluates, plans, and provides care for hospital patients in consultation with and under the direct supervision of the attending Physician. Performs inpatient clinical procedures under the direction of the attending Physician and according to approved protocols. Initiates and changes orders for tests and patient care based on the condition of the patient and approval of Physician.

The Physician Assistant Specialty compiles medical history information and other relevant data from the patient and family for the patient's medical record; evaluates patient condition and medical needs and develops a plan of care to be approved by the attending Physician; performs inpatient clinical procedures under the direction of the attending Physician and according to approved protocols; and performs advanced clinical procedures in emergency situations. The Physician Assistant initiates orders for inpatient diagnostic examinations or tests based on the attending Physician's verbal orders and/or written protocol, to be countersigned by the attending Physician; and initiates or changes patient care orders when there is a change in patient condition or after consulting with the attending Physician.

In collaboration with Physicians, provides follow-up care with the patients. Participates in inpatient care team responsibilities for the delivery of patient care, compliance with requirements of applicable agencies, and for the implementation of ongoing continuous quality improvement.

The Physician Assistant Specialty may performs clinical research on related topics, participates with the Physician in maintaining an effective on-call program and in health education and promotional activities as required. Attends routine meetings and participates on committee for policy/procedures development. Attends seminars and conferences as required.

The ideal Physician Assistant Specialty will have a Master's degree, an ability to communicate with patients, family members and all levels of staff, perform inpatient clinical procedures and provide patient care under the direction of the attending Physician.
