Job Description

Last Update: 2/27/24
Docstar is working with a client of ours that is looking for a Locum Physician Assistant for a 3 month contract to start, with the chance of being extended. We can acquire a license for this role.

Departments Served:

Hospital: Includes inpatient rounding & operating room (DaVinci included)

Clinic: Includes General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Gastroenterology, Bariatrics & Wound Clinic. Primarily- General Surgery.

Available Support Staff:

Secretaries: 3 full time office secretaries. Responsible for scheduling, referrals, phone calls, etc.

RN/LPN: 5 full time office nurses. Responsible for surgery scheduling, chart prep, patient follow up, etc.

Bariatric Nurse Coordinator: 1 full time nurse coordinator for the bariatric medical-surgical weight loss program.

Nurse Office Manager: 1 full time office manager with nursing background.

Position Requirements & Details:

  • Certification as a PA (Will look at NP's, but heavy preference for a PA-C)
  • 2+ years’ experience in General Surgery
  • Clinic Work Only
  • Staff includes 4 PA’s and 3 Physicians
  • Cases: Typically a lot of abdomens – colon, stomach, endo/colonoscopies, hernias, nissen, etc.
  • Responsible for seeing patients prior to MD & completing office visit note for provider to attest
  • See roughly 30 patients per day which equates to 30 notes per day
  • Potentially some wound care
  • Potential to help “close” with operations – would depend on how quickly PA picked up

Sample Schedule:

  • Mix of inpatient and outpatient: APP’s will rotate between inpatient and outpatient work
  • Inpatient: Typical week is Monday – Friday hospital rounds evaluating general surgery consults. This includes new consults and progress notes on previously consulted and/or operated patients in ICU, PCU & medical/surgical care. Assigned inpatient rounding typically happens 1 week per month.
  • Outpatient: Clinic is Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expectations to see patients prior to MD & have office note cosigned by provider. Midlevel only clinic held intermittently.
  • It is anticipated the APP will grow to evaluate consults with minimal oversight by the physician, allowing the physician to expand access in the outpatient clinic setting for additional new and follow up patient visits.
  • Outreach clinics – Expectation to see patients prior to M.D and/or assist with outreach surgery as needed. All outreaches are M-F, during business hours.
