Position Description:

Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data gathering abilities to reach decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under direction and responsibility of a Physician.

Major/Essential Functions:

Provides patient services under direct supervision and responsibility of Physician and or Mental Health Clinical Program Director. Provides health care to mentally ill offenders, properly documents findings and plan in the medical record in a timely fashion, according to TDCJ and TTUHSC policy; completes other required paperwork associated with care at primary units.

Orders medical tests/examinations in accordance with Texas Department of Criminal Justice and TTUHSC Correctional Managed Health Care protocol and contract provisions.

Provides patient services under direct supervision and responsibility of Physician and or Mental Health Clinical Program Director.

Elicits detailed patient histories.

Orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests, and interprets test results for deviations from normal.

Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.

Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

May render emergency medical service without supervision, pending the arrival of a responsible physician, in cases where immediate diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid disability or death.

Provides mental health care, documents charts, and completes other paperwork associated with care.

Takes in-house call and regional evening and weekend call on a rotation basis.
Under supervision of the Mental Health Clinical Program Director examines offender/patients to determine general mental health and prescribes treatment in conjunction with treatment teams' input.

Under supervision of the Mental Health Clinical Program Director inspects, completes, and analyzes records, assigns, reviews and updates classification, completes admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries and makes rounds on patients admitted.

Refers patients to medical specialist or other practitioner for specialized treatment.
