The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Levine Children’s Hospital is actively seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to join their team of providers in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The APP will serve as an extension of the PICU provider team as a member of the Pediatric Critical Care Consult Team. This APP will work in conjunction with the PICU attending physician to provide consultation service throughout the Children’s Hospital and ED.

Job Summary

The PICU Acute Care NP or PA responsibilities include providing comprehensive care to all patients that meet Pediatric Critical Care consult criteria in collaboration with the attending physicians. The APP will be responsible for performing all PICU consults in collaboration with the PICU attending and communicate recommendations to the primary service providing care. The APP will be responsible for rounding daily on all consult patients and provide Pediatric Critical Care input and recommendations on multidisciplinary rounds on all consulted patients. The PICU APP Consult Service team will provide coverage 7 days per week (no nights). Schedule is conducive to providing work-life balance. Schedule may require flexibility based on program growth and need for coverage.

The APP functions under the supervision of the PICU attending in the inpatient critical care and acute care clinical settings in a primary children’s hospital.

Essential Functions

• Performs initial critical care consult and medical history, physical examinations, and daily assessments
• Documents all patient encounters, findings of examinations, assessments, interventions, and plan of care in a medically appropriate manner through daily consult progress notes in the electronic medical record
• Orders and interprets laboratory and radiology examinations
• Determines treatment plan recommendation for consult patients outside of the PICU and discusses these plans with the primary service team
• Attends all Pediatric Code Blue, Pediatric Rapid Response and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma activations
• Frequently rounds with PICU care team on PICU patients in addition to consult service patients
• Assists with clinical decision making, subspecialty team and family communications, and critical care procedures with back-up attending supervision (intubations, central venous access, arterial line access, chest tube placement, etc.) for PICU patients while primary team is rounding
• Acts as a patient advocate for the population served
• Attends, participates, and contributes to all PICU Division meetings, including quality initiative, M&Ms, journal clubs, and all other PICU business requirements
• Participates in critical care education initiatives within the PICU and throughout the children’s hospital for residents, medical students, APP students, RNs, and nursing students
• Works closely with the Medical Director of the Pediatric Critical Care Division to develop non-clinical activity interests

Education, Experience and Certifications
Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina. Eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in NC required. BLS for Healthcare Provider and PALS from AHA required with expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and manage medically complex patients.

Nurse Practitioner
Master’s Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice required. Acute care board certification required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in NC required. Certification in practice from a nationally recognized certifying body required. ACNP, AGACNP or CPNP-AC board certification required per population served. Prior PICU APP experience highly preferred.

Physician Assistant
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required, Master’s Degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants preferred. Experience in pediatric critical care highly preferred.
