  • The biliary system includes the gallbladder and bile ducts (thin tubes that go from the liver to the small [Register to View] one of the largest HPB programs in the country, we use the latest surgical techniques and technologies to help you get the best possible results. Because these are often highly complicated cases affecting multiple organs, our team works hand-in-hand with experts in other medical specialties, including Oncologists, Gastroenterologists, Therapeutic Endoscopists, Interventional Radiologists and Hepatologists. This allows us to provide you with specialized and complete care.Our HPB Surgery department is seeking an Advanced Practitioner to join the team! This position is location at our Main Hospital located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Job Summary  The core of the HPB ACP function will be the full support of the clinic, 5 days a week and provide low threshold, immediate referral access for complex HPB patients. The ACP would preferably have the experience and background to independently initiate and follow through on the assessment and workup of HPB surgery patients. Office Hours are Monday – Friday, 7am – 6pm. HPB Conditions Treated

  • The provider will function in an outpatient and inpatient setting caring for acute and chronically ill patients and serves as first assist in cutting surgical procedures such as Whipples and liver microwave ablations. The patient population would include complex surgical diseases and disorders of the liver, pancreas, biliary tract, and duodenum. The ACP will perform a wide range of surgical procedures under physician supervision such as insertion of porto - catheter, central venous lines, insertion and removal of chest tubes, intubations, placement of arterial lines, dialysis catheters, major liver resections, distal pancreatectomies, complex cholecystectomies, and biliary reconstructions. Provide the patient education on disease process, post-operative and discharge instructions.
  • Benign (non-cancerous) tissue growth in the liver, pancreas, bile duct or gallbladder.
  • Cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile duct or gallbladder.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors (when certain cells develop into tumors).
  • Gallstones (hard particles that can develop and get lodged in the gallbladder).
  • Acute and chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Infections or abscesses (pockets of fluid or pus).
  • Portal hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure in the large vein that brings blood from the intestine to the liver). Essential Functions

  • Performs initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations.
  • Records findings of examinations, assessments and plan of care.
  • Assist with new consults and admissions.
  • Daily assessment on intensive care progressive, and floor patients
  • Assist in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient
  • Function as a lead for development of multidisciplinary teams: nutritionist, pharmacists, respiratory therapist, and physical therapist for the HPB Team.
  • Serve a s a liaison for collaborating with physicians, patients, and nursing units.
  • Determine treatment plans for complex and high risk cancer patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers medications.
  • Orders and interprets daily laboratory and radiology examinations.
  • Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's medical record.
  • Skillfully use surgical instruments consistent with their design and purpose
  • Attends, participates and contributes to group/practice meetings and development of standard procedures for department.
  • Participates in evidence based research and publishing initiatives to improvement the care of HPB patients.Physical Requirements Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state one works. Eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in SC required. BLS for Healthcare Provider from AHA required with expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and make proactive decisions. Relative acute experience or surgical background is preferred.   • Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required; Masters Degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants preferred.
  • Masters Degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse required. Certification in the area of practice from a nationally recognized certifying body required. ACNP board certification preferred based population served.

  • Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms. Must possess intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity. Must have the ability to react and perform in stressful situations. Candidate must have to ability to work independently with limited supervision.
