Physician Assistant (PA) - Emergency Room job overview:

  • Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services and skills in primary and specialty medical care across all age groups (infant to geriatric)

  • Depending on the acuity of the patient, the PA will work independently and/or in conjunction with the attending physician to complete the patient encounter.

  • Counsel's patients on medical problems, use of drugs, expected effects of treatment, family planning, child care, diet, and other therapeutic health maintenance matters.

  • Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice.

  • Provides services by collecting data required for diagnosis and performing procedures and services.

  • Obtains and evaluates medical histories, performs physical examinations, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and orders laboratory studies, radiographs, electrocardiograms, and other special examinations.

  • Collects specimens for pathologic examination.

  • Analyzes and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and establishes plans for solution of clinical problems.

  • Makes entries in patient's permanent medical records.

  • In emergency situations, administers lifesaving procedures and medications pending availability of physician.

  • Procedures include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment of life endangering traumatic injuries, defibrillation, insertion of endotracheal tubes, and administration of whole blood, oxygen, and other emergency medications.

  • Coordinates patient care. Coordinates patient care with other members of health care team.

  • Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management.

  • Accomplishes narrative summaries and other documentation.

Physician Assistant (PA) - Emergency Room job qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Graduate from an accredited college or university certified by the ARC-PA
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA)
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • Computer competency (Microsoft applications and Outlook)

  • Bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)

or

  • Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months' duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in health care occupation or a health-related science

or

  • At least 24 months of experience as an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant within the last 36 months in the specialty, caring for a wide range of patient complaints and the initial recognition, evaluation, care and disposition in response to acute illness and/or injury of patients (infant to geriatric) presenting for emergent or urgent care.
