Community-Origin MRSA Emerging in High-Risk Newborns

Newborns admitted to intensive care nurseries are frequently colonized by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). According to a prospective surveillance study conducted in Atlanta, MRSA isolates from these patients are increasingly found to be of community origin rather than nosocomial, and appear to be transmitted vertically during birth.
