Job Description

Last Update: 7/08/16
Assignment Location: Roanoke Rapids, NC
Schedule: starts Friday at 5:00 pm and ends Monday at 8:00 am on the following dates:
April 22-25, May 20-23
June 17-20, July 22-25, may extend into the rest of 2016
Rounding Saturday and Sunday morning on all floor pediatric patients and nursery babies

o Floor census: 0-2 patients per day, about 15-20 minutes per patient. 30 minutes per patient is
generous and likely more time than is needed for our patients as there are no complicated patients.
Any sick newborns or pre-term infants are transferred to other facilities.
o Nursery census: 1-5 babies averaging about 15-20 minutes to examine infant & speak with parents.
o The floor is often empty but there are usually infants in the nursery. These are average numbers as
there can be more or less patients at any time.
• We are not a busy hospital for Pediatrics and the majority of time is spent answering phone calls rather
than being in the hospital. Average about 10-15 calls per day.
• The primary reason on-call Pediatricians go back to the hospital is for Stat C-sections. Our Pediatrics
Director has only been called twice in three years to come in to see an ER patient because the ER
provider wasn't comfortable. Whenever possible mothers in labor with infants with known abnormalities
or pre-term labor are transferred prior to delivery. The calls are more phone triage and to give advice.
• Many weekends there are no deliveries. A typical weekend will have 1-2 C-sections with the remaining
deliveries being routine.
• Must be able to be privileged and covered for malpractice for the following (rarely needed, but locums
must be comfortable if these need to be done on newborn infants):
o umbilical venous catheterization
o IV start/fluid/electrolyte management
o Intubations (newborns only)
o EKG interpretation
o ventilator care
• Hospital admissions are for routine Pediatric diagnoses such as asthma, dehydration, fever, pneumonia.
No NICU/PICU - Admissions requiring specialty care or ICU care are transferred to other facilities.
• Board certification, PALS, and NRP required.
• Rural Health Group uses eClinicalWorks (eCW) EMR, the hospital uses Meditech (ideal if provider has
experience with one or both, but not absolutely required).
• Our Pediatrics Director is happy to speak with candidates to answer other specific questions.
• Lodging will be at Hilton Garden Inn
• If there would be any “yes” answers to the attestation questions on the last page of the attachment (taken from our CVO’s application form), please have the candidate provide details to be sent with the presentation.
