Job Description

Last Update: 1/14/21
Children’s Hospital of Michigan and University Pediatrics are looking to recruit Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians for our rapidly growing program. Because of the success of the current program, we are expanding and opening a free-standing pediatric facility that includes a 24/7 pediatric ER in Troy, Michigan. This means we are looking to hire for our in-hospital Pediatric ER as well as for the new facility. This is an exciting opportunity for new graduates and experienced physicians alike.
Children’s Hospital of Michigan has one of the busiest Pediatric ERs in the country. We are a Level I Trauma Center, ACS certified pediatric burn center, with 52 beds and an annual census of 90,000 visits. As an ER attending, however, you will only be responsible for a ER pod of 10 beds with the support of 2 nurses, 1 technician, and 2 residents and often with a PEM fellow in training. Lean methodology principles have shaped the physical design and patient management principles and will be used at both facilities to streamline the work environment and optimize patient experience.
Working at The Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Pediatric ER helps you to pursue your passion for medicine. First, you will find a good work-life balance as shift distribution is extremely democratic. Working with approximately 45 like-minded colleagues allows us to maintain significant flexibility to staff the ER. The ER has dual coverage for 7 hours at night while the rest of the day we have 5 staff attendings working in 5 ER pods. This, along with access to all pediatric subspecialists (medical and surgical) 24/7 allows us to provide the best clinical care to children with all acuities of illness.
Furthermore, there are ample opportunities for conducting research and/or engaging in scholarly pursuits such as teaching PEM fellows and the nearly 30 residents a month from different residency programs. Children's Hospital is one of the participating ERs in PECARN (Pediatric Emergency Care Applied research Network - www.pecarn.org) and has robust record of ongoing extramural federal and non-federal funding. The ER also houses the Center for Quality and Innovation; this program’s vision of influencing a positive change through data-driven and evidence-based changes has been influencing care for pediatric patients across the institution and our parent organization.
We are seeking PEM fellowship trained individuals and are willing to consider General Pediatricians who have urgent care or emergency medicine experience. Additionally, Emergency Medicine physicians who have experience and/or an interest in Pediatrics will be considered. Additionally, we can offer joint appointments for dually trained individuals at our neighboring sister hospital that has one of the oldest and most prestigious residency programs in the country.
