Neonatal-perinatal medicine (locum tenens) involves the care of premature and full term babies who face complex, neonatal issues. These babies are in critical condition and need specialized treatment in order to survive. Some of these problems faced by newborns cared for in neonatal-perinatal medicine include; low birth weight, pulmonary hypertension, perinatal asphyxia, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and critical surgical challenges. Neonatal-perinatal medicine focuses on clinical care, research, and education to help newborn patients facing the aforementioned challenges.
