The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is a physician who provides leadership in planning, direction, and support of an integrated program for health care informatics at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHCS). The incumbent reports to Deputy Chief of Staff and must be technically skilled and knowledgeable about clinical informatics. The CHIO will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all clinical reminders. The CHIO will set-up, with input from the service chief's, provider profiles, with real-time data, on all clinical performance measures for each provider. The CHIO will automate a scorecard on clinical measures and other dimensions of care. The CHIO functions as liaison among management, clinicians, and IT staff at the facility, as well as VISN or Region. The CHIO demonstrates a high level of analytical ability and an extensive knowledge of healthcare issues. The CHIO guides staff in taking advantage of innovations in clinical informatics technology. This includes innovative technologies that impact the delivery of clinical care throughout CAVHCS with particular attention to how clinical informatics technologies help or impede the delivery of care; review of innovations to CPRS and VistA systems with attention to assessing these innovations and considering methods of implementation; and exploration of new technologies or improvements to existing technologies that are developed in the private sector. The CHIO works with a staff of health informatics specialists. The CHIO has overall supervisor responsibility for staff supporting the CHIO office, Clinical Informatics staff, Tele health program including home tele health, My HealthyVet program and any other staff as assigned. The CHIO also acts as the physician champion for telemedicine initiatives. In addition, CHIO will have clinical practice and manage a panel of Veterans (40% time).
