A hospitalist (locum tenens) is a physician that is generally Internal Medicine residency trained but can be from Family Medicine or other sub-specialty programs. They specialize in the care of patients who have been admitted into a hospital. These general medicine professionals perform a variety of roles in the hospital and, accordingly, must be familiar with the entirety of human physiology and a wide range of illnesses and medical conditions. Hospitalists complete residencies in internal medicine, much like primary care physicians. When patients arrive to the hospital, a hospitalist will take care of them, prescribing treatment as needed, before referring them to a specialist or discharging them from the facility.

Required Qualifications
Shifts start at 7 AM and are either 10 or 12 hours, typically six admissions per day. There are two doctors on during days with a mid level most days from 11 A to 11 PM. The average census is 15 patient per doctor, the average length of stay is 3 days. Thus most mornings will be busy with discharge planning and dictations. A very strong case management team is in place to help you. Multidisciplinary rounds occur daily at 9 AM and are required
