Close to a university town in Watauga County, atop the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and serves as the county seat and market town.
The Town of was incorporated in 1872 and its current population is 17,751. It has the highest elevation (3,300 feet) of any town of its size (over 10,000 population) east of the Mississippi River. During summer, high temperatures are typically 76°F or below, noticeably cooler than the lowland areas to the east and south. Summers are also considerably cooler than most parts of the Carolinas. Winters are colder with sleet and snowfall common.
Located off the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, it offers its residents and visitors a four-season playground for sports and outdoor activities. It is recognized by travel journalists as an \"ultimate outdoor adventure destination\" in the Southeast. It is also home to Appalachian State University, the Appalachian Regional Medical Center, scores of businesses, large and small as well as tourist attractions and a progressive school system consistently ranked for its excellence.

Acceptable Specialty: Prefer IM. Will look at FP with ample Hosp experience. Must be BC or truly BE, within 3 years of residency and planning to sit for boards.

Availability: As soon as credentialed and ongoing.

Current situation: Perm recruiting for several full-time physicians and using other locum tenens to cover.

Schedule: 7a-7p or 7p-7a. Work 7 on-7 off.

Certifications requirements:
Board Certified: Yes or within 3 years of residency and planning to take boards.
BLS/ACLS/ATLS/PALS/NRP/Other: ACLS

# of physicians in clinic/program: 3 day teams and 1 night. 8 physician group.

Support staff: Available at Hosp. Back up to include 4 Card, ED, GI and Uro. No intensivist, ID, or Endo on staff.

Procedures: Intubation.

Patient mix: 100% adult.

Charting: Dictation & e-signature.

Who handles codes: Hospitalist.

Who handles admits: Hospitalist.

ICU involvement: Yes. 10 bed ICU. Will ship to larger centers if necessary.

Patient census: 16 encounters per 12-hour shift. 2-3 admits per shift (so 13-14 census).

Credentialing time frame: 4-6 weeks. Will do full day orientation prior to shift to include IT training, tour, lunch, shadowing, and so on. Must work two day shifts prior to working at night.
