Unique Hospitalist-Emergency Medicine Opportunity in Western North Carolina

Swain County Hospital in Sylvia, North Carolina, is seeking an emergency medicine/hospitalist physician to join the medical community serving the patients of Swain and Graham counties in western North Carolina.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
• Swain County Hospital is a 48-bed critical access hospital featuring an emergency department serving 15,000 patients per year.
• You will join a complement of physicians caring for patients in the emergency department and providing inpatient hospitalist care to a census of three to four patients per day.
• A primary care practice is housed within the hospital as well as imaging, lab and rehabilitation services.
• Subspecialists from Harris Regional Hospital hold rotating clinic hours at Swain County Hospital.
• Excellent compensation and benefits package

ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
• Under the terms of the acquisition agreement, which was reviewed by the Attorney General of North Carolina, Duke LifePoint purchased Harris Regional Hospital, an 86-bed hospital in Sylva; Swain County Hospital, a 48-bed hospital in Bryson City; and WestCare Medical Park, an outpatient medical facility in Franklin. Duke LifePoint will invest a minimum of $43 million in capital improvements over the next eight years and provide new resources to help the system grow, recruit new physicians, enhance services and improve health care delivery throughout the region.
• Becoming part of Duke LifePoint offers many benefits to WestCare’s hospitals, medical staff, employees and communities. Proceeds from the acquisition will retire WestCare’s financial obligations and fund a locally governed charitable foundation to support community needs. WestCare also becomes a local taxpayer, providing a source of new tax revenue to support the local economy.
• WestCare’s hospitals now have access to Duke University Health System’s top-ranked patient safety, quality and education programs and LifePoint’s financial and operational resources and expertise.
• About WestCare Health System
WestCare Health System was formed through a partnership of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain County Hospital in 1997 and serves Jackson, Swain, Macon and Graham counties with primary and subspecialty care, outpatient facilities and urgent care.
• About Duke LifePoint Healthcare
Duke LifePoint Healthcare, a joint venture of Duke University Health System, Inc. and LifePoint Hospitals® (NASDAQ: LPNT), was established to build a dynamic network of hospitals and healthcare providers. The joint venture, which brings together LifePoint's experience in community-based hospital management and Duke's world-renowned leadership in clinical service, is strengthening and improving healthcare delivery by providing community hospitals the clinical, quality and operational resources they need to grow and prosper. For additional information, visit the Duke LifePoint Healthcare website.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
• Bryson City, North Carolina, population 1,400+, borders the southern side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in western North Carolina. It lies just one hour west of Asheville, two hours from Greenville, Knoxville and Chattanooga and three hours from Atlanta and Charlotte.
• The Tuckasegee River flows through Bryson, and the town itself is surrounded on all sides by mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains rise to the north, the Cowee Mountains rise to the south, and the Plott Balsams rise to the east. The boundary of the Nantahala National Forest passes just south of the city, and the boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park passes just to the north. The Qualla Boundary, which comprises the bulk of the reservation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, dominates the area to the east.
• Native Americans have been living and hunting in the vicinity of what is now Bryson City for nearly 14,000 years. The village of Kituhwa, which the Cherokee believed to be their oldest village, was located along the Tuckasegee immediately upstream from Bryson City. In 1567, an orata (minor chief) from Kituhwa is believed to have met with Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in the French Broad Valley to the north. Although Kituhwa was burned by American soldiers in 1776, the Cherokee continued to hold annual ceremonial dances at the site throughout the 19th century.
• The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which opened in 1933, provides a major source of revenue for Swain County. Horace Kephart, an author and outdoors enthusiast who operated out of Bryson City for several years, was a key early proponent for the creation of the park. The Deep Creek section of the park, which is immediately north of Bryson City, is home to a large campground and multiple trailheads. The park's main eastern entrance is located just a few miles east of Bryson City at Cherokee.
• Cherokee is also home to the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
• The region is home to more than 23,000 year-round residents in Swain and Graham counties and a popular vacation destination for thousands of others seeking outdoor activities and natural beauty.
• Each season brings new adventures, activities, and possibilities: whitewater rafting, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, tubing, zip-lining, paddle boarding, mountain biking and scenic train rides. Hiking, biking, fishing, camping, hunting, rafting…and breathtaking vistas.
