ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
• Fort Irwin is a U.S. Army base nearly the size of Rhode Island, located in the Mojave Desert about 30 minutes northeast of Barstow, California. It is home to the National Training Center (NTC) at which all U.S. troops, from all the services, spend a twenty-one day rotation before they deploy overseas. It is also home to several units including the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment “Blackhorse” and the 916th Support Brigade.
• The city of Barstow, population 22,000+, is a major transportation hub where several major highways converge in its center, and offers a thriving community with a short commute to work for military personnel.
• Barstow is also home to the Western America Railroad Museum and the Mojave River Valley Museum. Another famous attraction is the Barstow Route 66 "Mother Road" Museum which displays watercolors, paintings, and photographs of the historic route across the United States.
• The town of Apple Valley (population 69,000+) is located about a mile from the Fort Irwin military installation. The picturesque town a peaceful and relaxing alternative to the metropolitan areas. It is known for two of its famous residents, Roy and Dale Evans. Both of the stars are buried in Apple Valley and it was where Roy and Dale settled and took in many troubled boys over the years. One of the major attractions in the Apple Valley area is the Victor Valley Museum and Gallery. With its proximity to San Bernardino, Apple Valley offers a short drive to many dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities.
• The Mojave Desert covers 54,000 square miles in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. The area offers a plethora of outdoor adventures and activities—windsurfing, digging for dinosaurs, 4-wheeling and Mule rides, hiking trails, and much more.
• The major cities of Las Vegas and Los Angeles are about 2 hours away to the northeast and southwest, respectively.
